Title: Cannes Lions 2026: Influencers Take Center Stage as Brands Seek Strategic Partnerships
Cannes Lions, the premier global festival for the creative communications industry, has traditionally been a hub for marketing and advertising professionals. However, in recent years, a new crowd has emerged: influencers. At the 2026 edition, they were front and center, participating in panels, networking events, and meetings along the famous Croisette promenade. This shift marks a significant evolution in the role of influencers, who have built their followings online through their content and charisma, not business acumen.

Title: Cannes Lions 2026: Influencers Take Center Stage as Brands Seek Strategic
Brands now increasingly view influencers as strategic partners, rather than just amplifiers of their marketing efforts. "The role of an influencer/creator in 2026 looks very different from what it was," says Shana Davis, founder of influencer marketing agency Ponte Firm. Caroline Wilson, an executive at UTA's brand advisory group, refers to creators as "a marketing strategy" in and of themselves, no longer just an add-on to a larger campaign.
As the creator economy continues to grow, influencers are being brought into the brand fold to contribute not just content, but strategic insights. Nikita Walia, strategy director at Unnamed, sees creators as businesspeople who understand their audiences, build their own intellectual property, and make sophisticated decisions about positioning, partnerships, and growth. The relationship between brands and creators is shifting from "make this content for us" to "help us determine what is worth making in the first place."
This trend was predicted by Vogue Business earlier this year, as creators are being taken more seriously and those riding the next wave of success are thinking longer-term. Often, however, the strategic work creators do with brands remains behind the scenes.
Brandon Edelman, a TikToker with 1.4 million followers, shared his observations from Cannes Lions, marveling at the business executives letting loose during late nights. Edelman, who has worked with brands to consult on creator partnerships, noted that many companies are seeking creators' input to improve their strategies. "A lot of brands are like, 'We need to use creators also to talk back to us and be like, 'Here's what we're doing wrong and here's what we should be doing,''" he said.
At the top tier, Coach launched &Coach, a content series co-created with top talent, further solidifying the blurring of lines between creators and brands. As the influencer landscape continues to evolve, it's clear that Cannes Lions 2026 marked a pivotal moment in the industry's shift towards strategic, long-term partnerships between brands and creators.
