Title: Edward Buchanan's The Situation Foundation Empowers Underrepresented Crea

Edward Buchanan, the renowned knitwear specialist and creative director, has opened a self-funded foundation in Milan to foster and guide creative talents from underrepresented communities. Dubbed The Situation, the 400-square-meter building in the NoLo district aims to provide a platform for people of color (POC), queer, and female cultural practitioners to thrive.

Buchanan's journey to this milestone began with the support of Black industry mentors during his studies at New York's Parsons School of Design. Gordon Henderson and Rodney Patterson played a pivotal role in his career, introducing him to opportunities at major fashion houses, including a position as Bottega Veneta's first ready-to-wear design director.

Now, Buchanan is paying it forward by ensuring The Situation remains financially autonomous, with no outside investment. He has personally invested €400,000 in the building's construction and materials, a testament to his commitment to the cause.

The ground floor will house a studio-gallery, hosting designers, artists, and creatives in residency programs. They will work, exhibit, and showcase their work, while Buchanan's office and archive of his design work will be located on the top floor.

Buchanan is currently building an esteemed board to guide the selection process, leveraging his extensive network and industry prestige to advise and connect the talents with partners and resources. He holds various roles, including Milan fashion director for Perfect Magazine, knitwear designer for Pucci, and founder of knitwear brand Sansovino 6.

Despite his success, Buchanan has faced barriers throughout his career. The Situation aims to improve the experience of underrepresented creatives navigating the industry today. In a conversation with Vogue, Buchanan shared the project's evolution and his hopes for creating a more inclusive environment.

The Situation's opening marks a significant step forward in Buchanan's mission to empower and uplift creatives from diverse backgrounds, ensuring a more equitable future for the fashion industry.
