Nordic Walking Gains Momentum: A Fitness Trend Sweeping Across the Globe
A growing number of walkers are swapping traditional trekking poles for Nordic walking poles, transforming a simple stroll into a full-body workout. This isn’t a fleeting fad; it’s a rapidly expanding trend rooted in Nordic exercise traditions.

Unlocking the Benefits: More Than Just a Walk in the Park
Originally developed as a training method for cross-country skiers, Nordic walking – utilizing specially designed poles that engage the upper body – is now gaining traction worldwide. Experts say it’s a low-impact, accessible option for individuals of all ages and Fitness levels, offering a surprising range of health benefits.
“What started as a training method for elite athletes has become one of the most accessible forms of exercise in the Nordic countries because it’s low-impact, easy to do, and suitable for people of almost any age and Fitness level,” explains Nicoline Roth, CEO and founder of NRTHRN Strong. “It’s a great example of how movement can be both highly effective and something you can do for life.”
Heather Viola, DO, assistant professor of general internal medicine at Mount Sinai, highlights key advantages: reducing pressure on joints, improving balance, engaging all muscle groups, and boosting endurance. “A walking stick gives you an extra point of support, which can help you feel steadier and more confident,” she notes. “Over long distances, this can [also] help reduce fatigue and make walking feel more comfortable.”
But it’s not without considerations. Dr. Viola cautions that poles require practice to use correctly and may not be suitable for those with certain shoulder or hand injuries. Proper technique – adjusting pole height to approximately a 90-degree elbow bend – is crucial for maximizing effectiveness and preventing awkwardness.
NRTHRN Strong’s classes incorporate foundational cross-country skiing movements, utilizing their trainer machine to further challenge the body. Roth emphasizes that this approach “reminds us that wellness doesn’t have to be complicated.”
The trend extends beyond mere Fitness. In Scandinavia, movement is deeply ingrained in daily life, a far cry from the gym-centric approach often seen elsewhere. Nordic walking reinforces this connection with nature, encouraging people to spend more time outdoors.
While the benefits are substantial – from improved joint health to a more engaging workout – it’s important to approach Nordic walking with awareness. Consulting with a doctor or physical therapist before starting is always advisable, particularly for individuals with pre-existing conditions. The key takeaway? A simple walk can become a powerful tool for enhancing both physical and mental well-being.
