Seoul's amomento: quietly disrupting fashion with timeless style

The idea started with a simple observation – how people reacted to clothing. Myeongsoo Lee, co-founder of Seoul-based brand Amomento, began with a hunch, a desire to understand the subtle shifts in consumer taste. Now, just over a decade later, the brand is quietly commanding significant influence in the Korean Fashion landscape, defying the relentless churn of fast-moving trends.

A counter-narrative to k-pop hype

While contemporary Korean Fashion thrives on the rapid adoption of K-pop idols’ styles, Amomento is betting on a more enduring aesthetic – a deliberate rejection of fleeting trends. The brand’s creations are characterized by a restrained elegance, favoring neutral palettes and silhouettes that subtly play with proportion, offering a welcome respite from the constant barrage of maximalism.

From boutique to brand powerhouse

From boutique to brand powerhouse

What began as a sister’s initial experiment in 2015, spearheaded by Mee-Kung ‘MK’ Lee, has blossomed into an operation generating $18 million in annual revenue and boasting a 34% compound annual growth rate. Initially housed within Shop Amomento, a multi-brand retailer, the label swiftly established its own identity, separating itself from the merchant store in 2016. Today, Amomento operates three brand-owned stores in Seoul and Tokyo, alongside a thriving online presence and a significant international footprint – stocking its designs in boutiques from New York to Sydney.

Decoding the korean consumer

Decoding the korean consumer

Lee believes a fundamental shift is underway amongst Korean consumers. “Korean customer taste is developing,” he states. “I can tell that consumers here are becoming increasingly mature in the way they approach clothing, moving beyond simply following a single dominant trend.” The impact of K-pop, undeniably vast, is being superseded by a desire for individual expression – a sentiment perfectly captured by Amomento’s philosophy.

More than just clothes: a holistic brand experience

But Amomento isn’t just about clothing. The ‘Reception’ café, nestled adjacent to Shop Amomento, serves as a loss leader, designed to cultivate a specific brand atmosphere. Filled with natural light, bonsai trees, and art installations, it’s a deliberately curated space intended to be a “chill” destination – a counterpoint to the frenetic pace of Seoul’s shopping districts. The brand’s archive store, showcasing past seasons, further reinforces this immersive experience.

Global expansion and dtc dominance

Amomento’s strategic expansion extends beyond domestic borders, with plans for increased distribution in Japan and pop-up events in Shanghai and Chengdu. Notably, direct-to-consumer (DTC) sales currently account for 70% of revenue, growing at a robust 45% annually. Manufactured primarily in China – albeit with a distinctly Korean approach – Amomento’s pieces range from $100 for a simple cotton top to over $1,200 for a luxurious lambskin hoodie, maintaining a competitive price point while prioritizing quality. The brand’s ambition is to join the official Paris Fashion Week Men’s calendar, a move Lee believes will generate considerable buzz, citing the immediate response to their showroom displays – attracting passersby eager to glimpse the brand’s latest offerings.

A new chapter: amomento plus

Looking ahead, Amomento is introducing Amomento Plus, a sportswear line designed to cater to the growing demand for ease and comfort, echoing Lee’s observation that “outside activity is going to be more and more important.” With pricing and quality aligning with the brand’s core aesthetic, this expansion promises to broaden Amomento’s appeal and solidify its position as a brand that understands – and anticipates – the needs of its discerning clientele.
