Men are feeling the fertility pressure too: a generation z shift

For decades, women have navigated a minefield of expectations surrounding fertility – from vitamins to careers, and the daunting prospect of egg freezing. But a new study reveals a surprising shift: men are increasingly feeling the pressure, particularly within Generation Z.

A shared responsibility, finally?

Research from Cosmopolitan indicates that while women still shoulder the primary responsibility for fertility planning, there’s a growing recognition that it’s a shared endeavor. Gen Z, unlike previous generations, is demonstrating a significantly more equitable view – 70% believe male and female partners equally contribute to the process. This contrasts sharply with millennials and Gen X, where only 56% hold this belief.

However, the pressure isn’t evenly distributed. Gen Z men wanting children are twice as likely as their older male counterparts to report feeling pressure from their partners, and almost twice as likely to grapple with self-imposed anxieties. They’re showing up to healthcare professionals seeking guidance at rates comparable to young women desiring children.

The silent struggle

The study unearths a crucial detail: the pressure isn't coming from outside; it's frequently emanating from within. Gen Z men are twice as likely to feel pressure from their partners, and almost twice as likely to experience internalised anxiety – a stark contrast to the dynamics observed in older generations.

The research highlights a fundamental change in attitudes. While societal expectations still disproportionately fall on women, Gen Z men are acknowledging their role.
