From teen drama to yellowstone: hart denton’s hometown redemption
Little Rock didn’t exactly welcome Hart Denton’s early roles in 13 Reasons Why and Riverdale. But after his breakout performance as the gruff foreman Chet in Yellowstone’s Dutton Ranch spin-off – a series that instantly became Paramount+’s biggest debut – Denton has finally earned the respect of his hometown. ‘Taylor Sheridan brought the cowboy back,’ he admits, speaking with a quiet intensity over Zoom. ‘The people of Arkansas reached out to me in a way I’ve never experienced, a genuine pride that’s completely unexpected.’
A tragic end in texas
Chet’s journey, however, was tragically short-lived. Episode 6, “A Cowboy Saint,” saw the character meet a violent end, silencing his attempts to blackmail the Dutton family after being fired and discarded. Denton reveals that the plan was always for Chet to meet a grim fate – a deliberate design choice by Sheridan’s team. ‘He’s our character with nine lives,’ Denton explains. ‘He’s done everything he can to survive, even when it’s utterly hopeless. It’s heartbreaking because he’s not fighting for himself.’
Cowboy camp and a family found
Denton’s deep understanding of Chet stems from a surprisingly formative experience: a month spent at a rigorous Taylor Sheridan-led cowboy camp. ‘I grew up around ranchers, and my sisters rode horses competitively,’ he recounts. ‘I just felt like I knew who this guy was.’ He spent his time absorbing the stories and wisdom of the seasoned cowboys there, particularly from one veteran who’d left home at 12 to forge his own path. ‘I tried to be a sponge,’ Denton says, ‘just soaking it all in.’
A legacy of toughness
What’s remarkable about the Dutton Ranch universe, according to Denton, is the sheer resilience of its characters. ‘Every single thing those guys do, they make it look effortless,’ he observes. ‘There’s this cowboy who keeps falling during a stunt – you’d never suspect he’d broken ribs yesterday. These guys… they’re just cut different.’ The level of physical preparation for scenes like Chet’s final confrontation was intense, involving a full head cast and a disconcerting 45-minute immersion in a dark, airtight environment with tiny breathing holes – a process overseen by makeup artist Rachel Burney, who previously worked on Heath Ledger's transformation for The Dark Knight.
Future horizons
Despite the bittersweet ending for Chet, Denton remains optimistic about his future with Sheridan. ‘I’ve talked to some people, but we’ll see,’ he states, hinting at potential involvement in other Sheridan projects. ‘Right now, the Paramount to NBC thing is happening, so that’s all being figured out.’ He pauses, a thoughtful glint in his eye. ‘But yes, I would say there’s more to come.’
