BBC's 'Ludwig' Returns for Season 2 with New Cast and Release Date

The detective show, which has been branded the ‘best British drama in years’, is returning for a second season. And the release date is much sooner than you’d think!

Ludwig – which first premiered in 2024 – will return later this month (more details in a moment), with the likes of Anna Maxwell-Martin and David Mitchell reprising their roles. There’s also an exciting new addition to the cast for Ludwig season two.

What is ‘Ludwig’ About?

In season one, “accidental detective” John Taylor was on a quest to crack the biggest puzzle of his life: finding his missing brother. In season two, John (AKA Ludwig) now works as a Crime Scene Consultant for the Cambridge Police Authority. ‘Brilliant at solving puzzles but hopeless at everything else.’ The case of Ludwig’s missing twin brother hasn’t yet been solved, and he’s forbidden from using police resources to investigate.

Who’s in the Cast?

David Mitchell is reprising his role as John ‘Ludwig’ Taylor, as is Anna Maxwell-Martin, who plays John’s sister-in-law and wife of his missing brother, James. Joining the cast this season are Stephen Merchant as ‘cocky snooker champion Danny Sloane’ and Mark Bonnar as newspaper editor Gareth Fisher. Other new additions include Sian Clifford as local MP Joanne Kemper, Ben Ashenden as DC Ethan Cole, and Rumi Sutton as DC Caitlin Sullivan.

Release Date

Ludwig season two will premiere on Thursday 20 August 2026 at 9pm on BBC One. The first three episodes will be available to stream on BBC iPlayer immediately following the premiere, with the remaining episodes airing in September.
