Carven bets on a younger vision with former saint laurent designer

Paris is shifting its focus, and Carven is responding with a fresh creative helm.

Kai nesselrath takes the reins at french house

Mark Thomas, previously design director, has departed the storied Parisian fashion house, leaving a space for Kai Nesselrath, a name swiftly gaining traction within luxury circles. Nesselrath, boasting a decade at Saint Laurent under his belt – culminating in a head designer role – will unveil his inaugural collection during Paris Fashion Week’s Spring/Summer 2027 presentation. This move represents a deliberate strategic recalibration for Carven, a brand currently housed within China’s expansive ICCF Group.

Shawna Tao, CEO of Carven, articulated the rationale succinctly: “A new generation’s perspective on the world feels especially important today.” The sentiment underscores a calculated embrace of a youthful aesthetic, a move seemingly aimed at revitalizing the brand’s image amidst a complex history of creative transitions. Carven’s journey hasn’t been without turbulence; a 2018 bankruptcy forced a complete restructuring, subsequently rebranded as ICCF Group. Previous directors – Guillaume Henry, Alexis Martial and Adrien Caillaudaud, Serge Ruffieux, and most recently Louise Trotter – have all navigated the brand through periods of significant change.

Nesselrath’s appointment arrives at a pivotal juncture for Carven. The brand is actively pursuing a reconnection with its foundational DNA from 1945 – a distinctly French and inclusive approach, grounded in uncompromising creativity and a dedication to modern relevance. The ambition isn't merely to revisit the past; it’s to leverage its heritage while acknowledging the evolving demands of the contemporary market. “Excited to join Carven, with lightness and optimism,” Nesselrath stated, “I love clothes, spaces, and conversations that encourage breathing.”

This transition isn’t just about a new face; it’s about a signal. It suggests a tangible commitment to a dynamic future, one where Carven’s identity – a blend of timeless elegance and forward-thinking design – can thrive. The stakes are high, given the brand’s recent history, but the appointment of Nesselrath indicates a clear, and decidedly bold, direction.
