Technical nightmares and blonde transformations: katseye preps for coachella
A disastrous start to a crucial video call almost derailed Katseye’s preparations for Coachella, but a dazzling makeover and a dash of strategic hair color proved to be the antidote.
Chaos and connectivity issues
The group – Daniela Avanzini, Lara Raj, Megan Skiendiel, Yoonchae Jeung, and Sophia Laforteza – were sequestered in a remote Los Angeles dance studio, rehearsing their high-stakes performance, while I battled static, a dying laptop battery, and frozen cameras from Tennessee. The disparity in location and technical difficulties created a frustrating hurdle.

A golden transformation
The band’s visual creative team, spearheaded by Humberto Leon and João Moraes, decided to embrace a bold transformation last week, enlisting celebrity hairstylist George Papanikolas (a long-time Matrix ambassador). Katseye herself is a global brand ambassador for the brand.

Color chaos and inspired looks
It began with Yoonchae Jeung, who sought a long-desired blonde transformation, convincing her team to embrace the change. “I don’t even know who the person is in the inspiration photo, I just knew I wanted the color to have a little bit of yellow,” she explained, drawing inspiration from Pinterest. The effect cascaded through the group, resulting in a diverse range of blonde shades – Raj’s Y2K-inspired highlights referencing Christina Aguilera (“Xtina”), Skiendiel’s graphic mane echoing Olympic gold medalist Alysa Liu, and Avanzini’s subtle money pieces.
Strategic styling and hair health
But the Beauty wasn’t just about the colors. Matrix’s Build-A-Bond mask was dispatched to each member, recognizing the damage inherent in lightening hair. “Any time you’re lightening your hair, you’re putting it through stress,” noted Papanikolas. “To combat that, each girl was sent home with the Matrix Build-A-Bond mask and instructions to use it weekly.”
A coachella concept
The shift reflects Katseye’s commitment to evolving with each era, a trend visible across their previous projects. “We love to play around with our concepts with every era of Katseye,” explained Skiendiel, “It’s something that’s really prominent from SIS to Beautiful Chaos. ‘Pinky Up’ is our third comeback.”
Final thoughts
Despite the technical hurdles, the band remains focused on delivering a flawless performance. The final result – a blend of edgy textures, unexpected color pops, and a renewed commitment to hair health – suggests a powerful and visually striking Coachella debut.
